Albums of the Year.

In past years, I’m usually stuck with the daunting task of choosing my favorite twenty-ish records from a list of hundreds. I did not have that problem this year. 2011 was a pretty dull year, musically. There just weren’t a lot of exciting albums - nothing really thrilled me, which the exception of a record or two. It’s kind of a shame. As I type this, I’m looking at list of 20 albums, which was all I could come up with. Period. It hasn’t even been whittled down yet.

So, here are the rules. The first 3 are my favorites, hands down. The best of the best. The rest are, well, the rest of the best. They won’t be in any sort of ranking because that’s way too much for me to try to think about right now.

As always, I encourage you to buy these albums. Preferably from an indie record store, if possible. Most of these bands could actually use the money. I may have missed a record or two, so I may amend this list at a later date.

Here goes…

Top 3 Favorite Albums of 2011

1. True Widow As High As The Highest Heavens And From The Center To The Circumference Of The Earth
2. Mogwai Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
3. Dead Milkmen The King in Yellow

The Rest of the Best

The Appleseed Cast Middle States EP
Chokebore Falls Best EP
Doomtree No Kings
Drive Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Head of Skulls You Became Your Mind
The Horrors Skying
Junius Reports From The Threshold of Death
Mint Julep Save Your Season
Mogwai Earth Division EP
Two Bicycles The Ocean
We Were Promised Jetpacks In The Pit Of The Stomach
Wolves Like Us Late Love
Young Legionnare Crisis Works

A bunch of Mogwai’s gear was stolen from their base in Glasgow over the weekend, including Stuart’s Gretsch. Below is a partial list of what was taken.

Marshall JCM800 Bass Series Guitar Head - Serial No: 117401P
Orange Thunderverb 200 Guitar Head - Serial No: 017241110
Orange ad200b Bass Head
Fender Acoustic Guitar
Orange OR120 - Serial No: 997
Fender 72 telecaster (Black)
12 Rack Guitar Stand (In Black Case)
Gretsch Country Gentlemen Guitar (Plum)

Sadly, the band will probably be adding more to this list. If you have any info, please contact the band via their Facebook page

People suck. Stealing a band’s gear - ANY band’s gear - is total bullshit. There’s a special place in hell for people who do that.

Mogwai “Get To France”

I still have a hard time believing this is Mogwai. Such a departure. But I love it. It almost sounds like the score to one of those creepy 80’s Italian horror flicks.

Band Shirt Of The Day: Mogwai
I got this Mogwai shirt when the band played The Wiltern in Los Angeles on September 9, 2008. I have recently moved to L.A, and my dear old friend Dickfart O’Houlihan offered me a ticket to the show. Sadly, the morning of the concert, I woke up feeling like death - sicker than I had felt in years. I still managed to rally enough energy to go to the show, though that energy proved to be short lived and I had to leave about halfway through. Anyways, while we were there, my buddy and I each bought shirts - I bought a black one, and he bought the yellow one I’m wearing in the picture above. After several adult beverages, O’Houlihan handed me his yellow shirt so he could head down to the “pit.” Upon his return, I was surprised to see that he had another identical yellow shirt draped over his shoulder. As sick as I was feeling, I decided I’d ask him about it later, then I promptly made my way to the exit and headed home.
The next morning when I spoke with O’Houlihan, I found out what had happened. After he spent some time rocking out in front of the stage, he panicked and thought he had lost the shirt he had given to me to hold onto. So he went back to the merch stand and bought a new one.
And this is the story about how Ryan ended up with a weird yellow Mogwai shirt that looks kinda weird on him.
The end.

Now playing.
This EP is haunting. And beautiful. And REALLY different.
